February is Dental Health Month

Yawning Cat

Proper dental care is critical to the overall health of your pet.

Just like us, pets need their teeth cleaned to prevent complications to their health. Join us throughout February to get the dental care your pet needs! Thorough dental scaling requires sedation and often post procedural care. Now is the time to take advantage of 15% off dental procedures and 10% off dental products throughout the entire month. We are opening up Thursdays in addition to Tuesdays in February for these procedures. Contact our friendly front desk to check availability!

Let the Games Begin!

Short-coated Black and White Dog on Ground

The first weekend in November approaches, and that means it is almost time for the Charleston Scottish Games!

Hosted by the Scottish Society of Charleston, this Highland Gathering is an annual event that celebrates Scottish heritage and history. Eat and drink traditional Scottish fare, observe competitive athletic events and dance, and learn how Scottish people helped shape the Lowcountry.

Per tradition, The Folly Road Animal Hospital is a proud sponsor of the games, specifically taking great joy in showing off the Border Collies who exhibit their impressive herding skills every year (we are dog people, after all).

Look for our tent and stop by to say hi! There will be samples and swag while supplies last.

Remember to leave your own pets at home, no matter how much they try and convince you they are ready for the big leagues- these Border Collies are professionals, and we want to leave the herding to them.

Human offspring, however, are quite welcome! There will be children’s versions of traditional games to be played, as well as more modern amenities like a jump castle and crafts! Be sure to remind them there are things other than haggis to eat, but – how do they know they don’t like it if they don’t try it?

The 48th Annual Charleston Scottish Games will take place Saturday, November 2nd, 2019, from 9:00am to 5:00pm at Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant.

For more information and to purchase your tickets, click here.

We love sharing this event with all of our FRAH family, so we hope to see you there!

June News – Addressing Grain-Free Concerns and Preparing For a Hot Summer

Short-coated Fawn Dog Near Flower Pots

A grain-free diet – is it a good or a bad idea?

Our animal hospital strives to stay educated regarding advancements in veterinary medicine and in turn keep our clients well informed. We always keep an ear to the ground regarding what diets are passing fads and which are truly beneficial for our pets. The bottom line is always that every pet is different and thus has different dietary needs. Trust well established pet food brands that have been approved by veterinarians rather than small time specialty diets that come and go. We have formulated an outline on the latest concerns regarding grain-free and “boutique” diets which can be viewed here.

Stay cool out there!

It’s the time of year to keep an eye on the rising temperatures! Keep your pets cool as you would yourself, and monitor for signs of overheating in dogs like excessive panting and drooling, dark red or purple gums and lips as well as red eyes. Dogs suffering from heat stroke may also vomit, seize, or have a staggering gait. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, cool them down immediately by use of a garden hose or shower, get them in a cooler environment like shade or air conditioning, apply ice packs to armpits and chest, offer cool water and contact your veterinarian.

Heading out of town on vacation?

Our kennel is open and ready to keep your dog, cat, or exotic pet happy and entertained while you kick off your summer with a big trip! Contact our front desk to set up a reservation.

April News – Be Prevention Savvy!

Adult Black and White Dalmatian Licking Face of Woman

While you may be ignoring the thick green film of pollen on your car, there is no denying spring has sprung.

As we welcome warmer weather in 2019, The Folly Road Animal Hospital would like to take this time to talk parasite prevention.

Heartworm prevention is important year round. Despite humanity’s best attempts, hungry mosquitoes continue to plague our community.

Luckily, FRAH has many tried and true methods as well as awesome new products for preventing the spread of heartworm disease caused by these tiny winged villains.

Coraxis™

  • Coraxis is a new topical heartworm prevention for dogs. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, Coraxis treats AND prevents hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections – that’s huge! This product is a great option if your dog is difficult to pill, or has food allergies and reacts to oral medication. It is easy to use in conjunction with a product that prevents fleas and ticks. Remember, for each flea you do not see in your house, there are three mosquitoes sneaking in your screen door – always protect your pet from parasites monthly!

Proheart 6®

  • On the subject of convenient heartworm prevention, what if you didn’t have to bother your dog at all? Proheart 6 is an injection administered here at our hospital, and ensures your dog’s resentment is directed towards us, so you can continue to be the “cool mom”. We will send you reminders just like we do with vaccines to make sure you don’t miss doses. Proheart 6 is also the most economical option, with weight-based pricing as low as $27 for six months of protection.

Revolution PLUS

  • Finally, a truly inclusive topical product for cats exists. The all new Revolution Plus protects cats from fleas, ticks, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, AND heartworms. Six parasites are thwarted in one ointment applied to your cats neck monthly.

Trusted products like Trifexis, Heartgard, Nexgard, BravectoAdvantage Multi, Simparica and Seresto all have great rebates for summer! Check out the great deals on our online pharmacy.

Consider adding tick protection this year! Cases of tick borne illnesses are on the rise in South Carolina. Check out this graph on Lyme disease. Ask our staff what they recommend for your pet!

Springtime is a great time for Play-care! Dogs love socializing in our reinforced play yard. Call or stop by our office today to ask us about our Play-care packages so your dog can burn off some energy during the week!

We welcome any questions via 843-762-4944 or thefrahfd@gmail.com!

Happy Spring!

Wednesday Appointments Available!

Close-Up Photography of French Bulldogs
