Heartworm prevention is especially important here in the Lowcountry. Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquitoes, of which we have many! Often we see mosquitoes year-round, so always remember to protect your dog or cat with one of our recommended heartworm preventatives.

While ticks are not usually a huge problem in our warm climate, it is never a bad idea to add tick protection for your dog or cat, as ticks can spread diseases such as Lyme and Ehrlichia. Consider an oral product for dogs like Nexgard® or Bravecto®, or a Seresto® collar (which lasts 8 months and works for cats, too!) All of these products treat and prevent fleas as well.

Even if you never see fleas on your pet, remember that mosquitoes can get inside your house. Always use heartworm prevention for your dog or cat: Heartgard® and Tri-Heart Plus® prevent heartworms and intestinal parasites.
